IRISH FANCY CANARY

THE IRISH CANARY

Paul O' Kane.Derry City.N. Ireland.

  1. I have been keeeping ,breeding ,exhibiting and judging Irish fancy canaries for around twenty years. I first started  keeping birds when I was eight years old when I kept Budgierigars and Zebra finches. It was in 1985 that I was first introduced to the Irish fancy canary and shortly afterwards I joined my local cage bird society the City of Derry C.B.S. It was then I met my mentor and soon to become a great friend the late Robert Swann Robert took me under his wing and I owe a lot to him. In 1987 I became secretary of the society and I still hold this office to date, also that year I became a member of the Irish Fancy Canary Club of Ulster and in 1996 I became secretary of this club of which I also still hold office to date. I also keep, breed and exhibit British(Native) birds which I have been keeping since 1986 ( which I will also be building a site). I am also a member of the following clubs/societies Irish Fancy Canary Society , Irish Native Bird Breeders Society, National British Bird & Mule Club  N. I. , Mid Ulster British Bird Mule & Hybrid Club and the Cage Bird Societies 2000 of N. I. of which I am a founder member. I have also had a little bit of success on the show bench when in 1994 I won 2nd Best Exhibit at the Irish National Show in Dublin  in 1997  Best Exhibit at Swords C.B.S. in 2001 Best Exhibit at the Irish fancy Canary Club of Ulster Club show in 2001 Best Exhibit at Coleraine C.B.S. show in 2002 Best Exhibit at Limavady C.B.S. Show and in 2002 2nd Best Irish Fancy at the English National Cage & Aviary Bird Best Exhibit in show Magerafelt 2008 and Best British bird at the Mid Ulster and Northern Ireland all British shows 2009 Show amoung numerous other Best in Show awards . As a panel judge for the Irish Fancy canary and the British (Native Birds ) I have had the honour of judging at the Irish National the Scottish National the West of Scotland All British show the Mid Ulster All British Show the Southern Native All Native Show the Norhtern Counties Native Bird Mule & Hybrid Show 2008 the Irish Fancy Canary Society National Show and was chosen to judge at the English National Cage & Aviary Show but unfortunately it was cancelled. I have judged at almost all of the shows in Ireland and a few in Scotland. I must end now by saying that the wonderful world of bird keeping no matter what variety you keep is a very rewarding hobby I have met alot of people through the hobby and I am pleased to say are now very good friends. I hope you enjoy my site and I look forward to your views and comments.
